A fun single from Android Automatic. "City Heat" is explosive disco with an outrun pace, an anthemic action tone, and guitar synth accents, including a rapid-fire solo near the middle of the track. It's dangerous while driving. "Last Kiss" is a gentler, slower track whose percussive claps feel so distant that they sound like snapping fingers. The thing that really grabs me about "Last Kiss" is the higher-pitched synth line, which along with the astral chords gives the track a very dreamy feel.

While AA continues to lay down the disco beats, Watching Stars has a relaxed pace that's more in line with stargazing. "Paradise" flirts with outrun, but it's got dreamy slow sections as well. "Camaro Dreams" has a moody edge. "Lost Days" has some cool guitar and bass hooks during its stroll. "Midnight Rides" is another slow disco number with some fun cowbell and hi-hat and a simple synth solo. "Watching Stars" has a fun beat and guitar stingers backing a digital warmth not unlike Starforce.

I predominantly got this for the first track. The news reporter’s dramatised and slick narrativisation of human suffering, juxtaposed with wry reporting on a “celestial event,” that flattens both into equally streamlined consumerist fodder, is a problematic redoubled, and perhaps highlighted, by enjoying that very thing set to extremely funky music. Maybe there is some working through to do here…
